Toronto, July 11: On Wednesday, Olivia Chow will be sworn in as Toronto’s 66th mayor. With this a new era will begin in City Hall.
The mayoral duties are being held by Deputy Mayor Jennifer McElwee after the resignation of John Tory in February. Now McElwee is ready to hand those responsibilities over to the actual mayor. During an event in Toronto on Tuesday, Chow said she wanted to send one message to everyone: “Let’s all work together.” Working together we will be stronger. They said that there is no more waiting from them to do the work.
Critics say Chow’s campaign did not provide full policy details. But Chao is talking about bringing about massive change. Along with this, Chow is also claiming to make Toronto more affordable and more caring. Meanwhile, McElwee said that without additional help from the provincial and federal government, difficult decisions will have to be made for 2024.
Some candidates who had been Chow’s opponents in the election campaign are now trying to carve out a place for themselves in the new regime. Among them is longtime City Councilor Brad Bradford. He said that we were opponents during the elections, but now we will be coolies in the city hall. Chow also confirmed that city councilors will continue to work as before.
Chow will take the oath of office as Mayor of Toronto at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, followed by a brief address. The ceremony will be attended by councilors, city staff and agency representatives, former mayors and mayor-elect Chow as guests of honor.
