Peel Police kick off Road Saf Earlier this week, Peel Regional Police launches ‘Canada Road Safety Week,’ a seven-day national campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. This annual campaign creates increased public awareness to gain compliance to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s roads; a goal which the force says they are committed to.

While traffic on the Region’s roads has reduced due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone must continue to drive safely. In the first ten days of May, the Major Collision Bureau investigated six severe collisions. These included three fatal accidents, one of which was a fail to remain collision and three critical personal injury collisions. The focus of Canada Road Safety Week continues to be on behaviours like impaired driving, distracted driving, and aggressive driving, which put drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users at risk.

“Safe driving is no accident, driving sober and attentively within the speed limits will reduce collisions and save lives. We are encouraging citizens in the Region of Peel to continue to think about their driving and proceed with safety whenever they are on the road,” said Acting Inspector Gary Carty of Road Safety Services. Canada Road Safety Week is an initiative that is part of a national effort to help advance Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025 to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

The force said earlier this week that they are working hard to fulfill their commitment to the Vision Zero safety plan. “Peel Regional Police strives to reduce the number of fatalities on our roadways to zero,” a representative said in a statement this week. “Road Safety is a shared responsibility.”
