BRAMPTON, ON (September 18, 2020) – Yesterday, the Government of Ontario announced that effective today, unmonitored social gatherings and organized public events in Brampton and across Peel Region have been lowered to ten people indoors and 25 people outdoors to contain the spread of COVID-19. This includes functions, parties, dinners, gatherings, BBQs or wedding receptions held in private residences, backyards, parks and other recreational areas.

The new limits will not apply to events or gatherings held in staffed businesses and facilities, such as bars, restaurants, cinemas, convention centres or banquet halls, gyms, and recreational sporting or performing art events. Existing rules, including public health and workplace safety measures, for these businesses and facilities continue to be in effect. For more information, see the Government of Ontario’s media release.

Mayor Patrick Brown said, “The City of Brampton will continue to take any steps necessary to protect our community. I urge residents to please practice physical distancing, abide by the new social gathering limits and follow the Brampton COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law and Mandatory Face Coverings By-law. We must all work together to keep Brampton safe and curb the spread of COVID-19 in our community.”

While Regional Councillor, Wards 3 & 4; Lead, Mayor’s Reopening and Recovery Working Group,  Martin Medeiros,  said, “It is imperative that as a community, we continue to put in the work required to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in Brampton. I ask residents to please follow our extended Brampton COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law and Mandatory Face Coverings By-law, and respect the lowered social gatherings limits, so that together, we can move forward on our path to recovery and protect our community’s health and safety.”

To help protect the health and safety of residents and support the Government of Ontario and Region of Peel’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, Brampton City Council has also extended the expiry of the Brampton COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law and the Brampton COVID-19 Mandatory Face Coverings By-law to January 31, 2021.

Brampton COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law

Under the Brampton COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law, individuals not adhering to physical distancing regulation can be fined a minimum of $500 and maximum of up to $100,000 for each offence.

Municipal regulations under the by-law state:

  • Every person shall maintain at least a 2.0 metre distance from every other person when on public property, except persons who reside together in the same premises
  • No business shall permit any person to be seated or to be standing inside or outside the business at a distance of less than 2.0 metres from every other person, except persons who reside together in the same premises or the employees of the business.

Mandatory Face Coverings By-law

Under the Mandatory Face Coverings By-law, non-medical masks or face coverings are required in all indoor public spaces in Brampton to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The temporary by-law requires public establishments and businesses to ensure that masks or face coverings are worn in indoor public spaces under their control.

The by-law exempts certain individuals, including those who cannot wear a mask or facial covering due to medical reasons; children under the age of two; individuals engaged in an athletic activity in accordance with the Emergency Orders and individuals consuming food or drink at a permitted establishment (when the Province allows indoor dining to be reopened.
