The future looks green for residents taking transit in Caledon, as the province announced Monday that a new GO rail station would be built on the Humber Station Road and King Street lands.
The new site also received approval to accommodate expanded residential opportunities, as part of an expansion study that started in 2008. The new site, said officials, will dovetail with efforts to boost existing bus routes in the Town, such as the Mayfield West and Bolton routes, as well as existing GO bus routes that travel between Bolton and destinations in Malton and North York — routes that faced uncertainty over the past several years amid temporary extensions from Metrolinx and the province.
“This announcement fulfills a Council request, and is a step forward in ensuring our future is both sustainable and connected. Effective public transit is a critical part of the plan,” Mayor Allan Thompson said earlier this week, noting that the plan stays true to directives focusing on growth.
“It will bring both economic and environmental benefits to our community.” In a statement, the Town said it is now working on a public and stakeholder engagement strategy to create a larger vision plan for the area. The process to receive approval from the province for the development included extensive consultation, was supported by Town Council, and approved by the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal in late 2020, said the Town’s Chief Planner, Sylvia Kirkwood.
She indicated that the Town is “(looking) forward to moving ahead with our planning.”
