At least 3 women on Wednesday drowned after their boat capsized in the Narayani river in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar. As per a report by Dainik Jagran, 10 people including 9 women were aboard the boat when the horrific incident took place. However, the locals and fishermen nearby managed to save 7 people while 3 went missing. An hour later, 3 bodies were recovered from the Narayani River.

According to the report, all 9 women on board the boat were labourers and were going to cultivate their crops at the shore. Panic ensued in nearby areas shortly after the incident took place, however, Kushinagar DM, SP and MLA reached the spot and controlled the situation. The police sent the dead bodies for postmortem and suspected that a hole in the boat could be the reason why it capsized.

The report further stated that Misri Nishad, a resident of village Bodhi Chapra, has a farm in the village across the Narayani river. At eight o’clock in the morning, he was going towards his farm along with 9 women labourers in a boat to cultivate his produce. The boat suddenly overturned in the middle of the river and they all started drowning in the water.

Fishermen nearby immediately came for help and jumped into the river to save them. They rescued seven people including Misri Nishad, however, three women, identified, as 18-year-old Gudiya, 35-year-old Asma and 18-year-old Sonia, drowned in the Narayani river. An hour later, the rescue team recovered their dead bodies which were later sent for autopsy.

The report also said that all nine women had refused to sit after seeing the hole in the boat, but Misri, the owner of the farm, convinced them to sit in the boat. DM S Rajalingam said that boating is not allowed in the Narayani river and ordered to investigate the matter. Action will be taken against the guilty on the basis of investigation, he said.
