Prime Minister Mark Carney has condemned Israel’s decision to take control of Gaza City, warning that the move will worsen the humanitarian crisis and endanger hostages. Speaking at a news conference in Trenton, Ontario, on Friday, Carney said Canada stands with the United Kingdom and other nations in opposing the plan approved by Israel’s security cabinet earlier in the day.
“This action will not improve the humanitarian situation on the ground,” Carney said. “It will put the lives of hostages at greater risk rather than reducing the danger.” The decision marks an escalation in Israel’s nearly two-year-old conflict in the territory, prompting sharp criticism from both domestic and international voices.
Carney reiterated Canada’s call for an immediate ceasefire, alongside demands for Hamas to release all hostages and return the remains of those who have died. He stressed that Hamas must have no role in Gaza’s governance moving forward, saying Canada will continue working with allies to help achieve peace.
The Prime Minister also confirmed Canada’s intention to formally recognize the state of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. He emphasized that recognition would be part of a broader effort to promote long-term stability in the region.
Israel’s planned takeover has triggered global warnings of “catastrophic consequences,” with leaders urging de-escalation and renewed diplomatic efforts to end the fighting.
