Join us for Tamil Heritage Month, Chinese New Year, and Black History Month.

BRAMPTON, ON (January 20, 2020) – Mayor Patrick Brown and Councillors invite residents to celebrate Brampton’s diversity at a series of events this January and February. Learn more about Tamil heritage, celebrate Chinese New Year, and recognize the contributions of Black Canadians in our community.

Tamil Heritage Month

January is recognized as Tamil Heritage Month in Brampton to celebrate the contributions of Tamil Canadians. Learn more about this community’s history and culture on Friday, January 24 from 7 to 9 pm in the City Hall Atrium. Sample traditional cuisine, enjoy live performances, and join the community in raising the Tamil Heritage Month flag at this exciting event.

Chinese New Year

Welcome the Lunar New Year, and the Chinese Year of the Rat, at Brampton City Hall on Sunday, January 26 from 1 to 4 pm in the City Hall Atrium. This lively celebration will include iconic dragon and lion dances, calligraphy artists, and refreshments. Community leaders will offer wishes of prosperity and good health for the coming year. This event is organized in partnership with the Brampton Chinese Business Association, and is proudly supported by HSBC and Mandarin Restaurant.

Black History Month

February is recognized nationwide as Black History Month, a time to honour the legacy and continuing contributions of Black Canadians. Attend two events in February in celebration of our city’s Black African and Caribbean communities. Kick off the month with a flag raising ceremony on Saturday, February 1 at 2 pm in Ken Whillans Square, and bring the month to a close with the Beat of Black History Month event on Friday, February 28 at City Hall. This closing event will feature a marketplace with food and retail vendors from 12 to 8 pm in the Conservatory, and a ceremony including song, dance and spoken word performances at 6 pm in the Atrium.

Artists and vendors interested in participating in the Black History Month event are invited to apply to the City by January 30, 2020. Visit our website for details.

These events are part of Brampton’s Community Recognition Program, a series of cultural celebrations that the City hosts throughout the year to honour Brampton’s diversity. These events are a great opportunity for residents to learn about other cultures and get to know the many communities that make up our city.

For more information on these and other City events, visit www.brampton.ca.

Quote

“Brampton is a Mosaic, and City Council is proud to celebrate our community’s incredible diversity. On behalf of Council, we hope residents from all cultural backgrounds will join us to learn more about Tamil heritage and culture, celebrate Chinese New Year, and recognize the contributions of our Black African and Caribbean communities at these exciting upcoming events.”
