Brampton, ON — On February 18, Shafqat Ali, President of the Treasury Board of Canada, along with his local MP’s Sonia Sindhu, MP Amandeep Sodi, MP Iqwinder Gaheer, and Councillor Martin Medeiros, and the team of Iqbal Foods joined at Iqbal Foods to highlight significant government investments aimed at boosting the agri-food sector, particularly focusing on halal and kosher products. This initiative, part of a $25 million Kosher and Halal Investment Program, is set to enhance processing capacities and production efficiencies, further supporting Canadian businesses like Iqbal Foods.
During the event, MP Amandeep Sodi lauded the government’s strong mandate to create opportunities for community engagement and economic growth. “Our government is ready to support businesses like Iqbal Foods that cater to the diverse needs of our community,” he stated.
Hassan Shaikh from Iqbal Foods expressed gratitude, emphasizing the grocery store’s role as a hub for inclusive shopping experiences. “We are proud to represent both halal and kosher communities in Brampton, and this initiative will help us continue to serve our customers effectively,” Shaikh remarked.
Minister Shafqat Ali praised Iqbal Foods as an immigrant success story grounded in dedication and community values. He noted, “This investment is crucial for strengthening Canada’s agri-food sector and will create jobs while ensuring consumers have access to high-quality products.” Ali also pointed out that the halal market in Canada is projected to grow significantly, reaching $1.6 billion USD by 2027.
This investment is not only beneficial for local economies but also positions Canada to reduce its reliance on imports. The government’s recent announcement of the Canada Grocery’s Essential Benefit, which provides financial assistance to help families cope with rising living costs, reinforces their commitment to supporting Canadian citizens.
In conclusion, Iqbal Foods stands at the forefront of an evolving market, supported by government initiatives that promise to elevate the halal and kosher food sectors. With collaborative efforts from local representatives, there is optimism for a more resilient and inclusive agri-food landscape in Canada. As Minister Ali aptly stated, “Together, we can build a stronger and more vibrant community, ensuring everyone has access to affordable, high-quality food.”
