As the New Year is around the corner and we reflect on this past year, I would like to share the real results our Liberal Government has delivered for Canadians.
This year, I am proud of passing Bill C-237, which will lead to Canada having a national framework to fight diabetes. The goal of this is to enhance and coordinate awareness, funding, research, data collection, education, prevention, and treatment across all levels of government, and to suit the needs of Canada’s many regions and diverse population.
We also secured funding to help develop the downtown Riverwalk project, bring vaccine manufacturing right here to Peel Region, to fully electrify our transit fleet, and brought over $150 million in affordable housing investments.
Of course, our main focus for 2021 was the fight against COVID. Our government procured vaccines and led one of the most successful rollouts in the world. We worked hard to make sure families and businesses had the support they needed with programs like the recovery benefit, and the rent and wage subsidies. Brampton has had to show great resiliency this past year, and I want to thank frontline workers and health care professionals who have worked tirelessly this year to ensure the safety and health of everyone, as well as essential workers who continued to go in every day to keep our city and industries running.
Since the election, we have worked hard to make life more affordable for Bramptonians and Canadians by securing $10 a day child care in 11 provinces and territories, banning conversion therapy, securing 10 days of paid sick leave for federally regulated workers, protecting healthcare workers from intimidation, supporting workers and businesses especially affected by the pandemic, financial support for seniors and ensuring that boosters, vaccines and rapid tests are available for provinces and territories to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
As we look forward to the new year, we will continue to make sure that provinces and health care systems have everything they need to continue the fight against COVID; we are working on reducing the backlogs in our immigration system and addressing the worker shortage; we are advancing our commitment to fight climate change and reduce emissions, and we are working with municipalities to make housing more affordable in Brampton and across the country.
This holiday season, please continue doing the things that have kept us safe since the beginning of the pandemic by following public health measures including wearing masks, social distancing and most importantly getting your boosters and vaccines.
From my family to yours, I’d like to wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year 2022.
