After thousands of community votes were cast from across the U.S. and Canada, Constable Judith Solomon has been awarded the Axon RISE Officer Award in recognitionof her incredible courage and heroism.
In the early hours of February 7, 2022, Peel Regional Police received multiple 9-1-1 calls from panicked community members reporting that a female had been stabbed at a pharmacy in the City of Brampton.
Constable Judith Solomon was the first one to respond to the call at the end of her 12-hour shift. Solomon entered the pharmacy without back-up or hesitation. The only information she had was that a victim had been stabbed in the neck and that the culprit was still in the store.
Constable Solomon immediately assessed the situation, saw the victim and directed a bystander to apply pressure to her neck to slow down the bleeding. She then evacuated the pharmacy, located the culprit and without incident, successfully arrested them in a professional manner, in line with her training.
Once other officers arrived at the scene, she turned over the culprit and immediately returned to attend to the victim to administer life-saving first aid. Solomon continued with her calm approach by speaking to the victim, assuring her that she would be ok, and ensured the victim stayed conscious. Due to the first aid rendered at the pharmacy, the victim is expected to make a full recovery.
Solomon’s heroic actions prevented loss of life, harm to others and a volatile situation from escalating.
We’re able to recognize this act of heroism due to our newly implemented Body-Worn Cameras (BWC). We are one of few services in Ontario to embark on this innovation, and are proud of our officers for embracing the training and the functionality of BWC.
As a police service, we are immensely proud of Constable Solomon, and express our appreciation for the courage and bravery she displayed. Her work is a showcase of what our officers do every day, and we look forward to recognizing many more stories like this.
