The bodies of at least 40 individuals were discovered inside a tractor-trailer near San Antonio, Texas, according to several news outlets, which cited law enforcement officials who were briefed on the investigation.
KSAT news in San Antonio stated that there were 42 persons killed inside the vehicle during what is believed to be an attempt at migrant smuggling in South Texas. The vehicle was discovered in a desolate location on the southern outskirts of the city, according to accounts from the local media. The lines of a train were nearby.
The San Antonio Police Department has not yet released a comment about the event in question.
In the meanwhile, the Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said that the Mexican consul was on his way to the location where dozens of bodies were discovered inside of a truck. Ebrard said in a tweet that there was no information available about the victims’ nationalities at this time.
“There was a tragedy in Texas. allegedly died of suffocation in the trailer box. Consultation in progress on the way to the point. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this time. On Twitter, he said that the nationalities of those involved were unknown at this time.
On Twitter, the Mexican General Consulate in San Antonio said that it will provide assistance to any Mexicans who were engaged in the event, if there were any Mexicans involved in the incident. In addition to that, it was said that Consul General Ruben Minutti was already on route to the location.
