The City of Brampton is undertaking more than $6.5 million in improvements and rehabilitation to community park playgrounds, trails, and other facilities.
A federal government program established as part of the activities to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday is covering about one-third of those costs.
Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains announced Monday morning (July 24) Ottawa would provide more than $2.9 million for 61 projects in Brampton.
Bains, who is also responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), said the government funding for these projects would come through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150).
In addition to 58 city projects, the government also helping fund work at facilities operated by the Region of Peel, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, and YMCA of Greater Toronto.
Federal dollars will cover about one-third of a $1.8 million rehabilitation project at the Brampton YMCA.
Approximately 25 per cent of the $396,000 being spent to rehabilitate elevators at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum, and Archives (PAMA) should come from the CIP 150 fund.
Ottawa is also covering about half the cost of an $88,000 trail improvement plan at Heart Lake Conservation Area.
Bains referred to CIP 150 as a nation-building project.
He suggested there might be no better way to celebrate Canada than providing funds to improve the community and cultural facilities that bring Canadians together to establish bonds of friendship and understanding.
Officials expect rehabilitation at more than a dozen city playgrounds, including making some more accessible, and improvements to three-dozen pathways and trails across the municipality should be completed by the end of March 2018.
A $300,000 rehabilitation of the Chinguacousy Park Cenotaph Memorial is also among the work Mayor Linda Jeffrey described as priority projects.
The city is covering about two-thirds of the costs for the municipal projects.
Jeffrey said the investments would help enhance the lives of Brampton residents and visitors to the city.
“It will help make our city an even better place to live, work, and play,” she remarked.
