Peel Regional Police have arrested three individuals following violent clashes outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir temple in Brampton, Ontario. The confrontation occurred during a protest coinciding with a visit from Indian consular officials, leading to heightened security concerns and a police investigation. Although the exact charges remain undisclosed, authorities confirmed that more arrests and details may emerge as they continue to investigate “several acts of unlawfulness” linked to the incident.

Videos circulating on social media depict an intense altercation between protesters, some carrying banners supporting Khalistan, a proposed independent Sikh homeland, and other individuals holding India’s national flag. The videos reveal clashes involving fist fights and flagpoles being wielded as weapons near the temple grounds. Despite efforts to verify the footage, CBC Toronto has not yet confirmed the video’s authenticity.

Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah addressed the violence, stating that while peaceful protest is respected, criminal actions would not be tolerated. “Those who participate in violent activities will face arrest and charges,” he declared, emphasizing law enforcement’s commitment to maintaining public order. The protest eventually shifted to two other sites in nearby Mississauga, where police continued their presence.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other prominent leaders condemned the violence, marking a unified stance at various governmental levels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India also issued a rare statement denouncing the incident, calling it a “deliberate attack” on the Hindu community. Modi urged Canadian authorities to uphold the rule of law, criticizing attempts to intimidate Indian diplomats as “equally appalling.” His comments underscore the deepening diplomatic strain between Canada and India, amid ongoing debates surrounding Sikh separatism and security within Canada’s Indian diaspora.

In response to the violence, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his disappointment, stressing the importance of religious freedom in Canada and advocating for a safe environment around places of worship. Mayor Brown announced plans to introduce a motion within Brampton’s city council aimed at restricting protests near religious sites, reflecting a growing concern about preserving peace and safety within these spaces.

The violence comes amid heightened tensions between Canada and India, primarily surrounding the pro-Khalistan movement. Recent weeks have seen allegations from Ottawa accusing India of targeting Sikh activists in Canada, claims that the Indian government has firmly denied. This incident further underscores the complex dynamics within Canada’s multicultural landscape, as leaders on both sides grapple with the political and social impacts of diasporic activism and extremism.
