City of Brampton hosts Backyard Ice Rink Contest and additional outdoor and at-home recreation programs for residents

BRAMPTON, ON (January 7, 2022) – The City of Brampton is hosting a range of family-friendly activities for everyone to stay active, both outdoors and from the comfort of their own home, this winter.

Outdoor amenities will remain open, weather and ice conditions permitting. The City of Brampton advises that residents monitor the local weather forecast before heading out. Please note, activities and locations may be adjusted based on demand and public safety measures.

While, Patrick Brown, Mayor, City of Brampton “Brampton said we are committed to supporting residents’ health and well-being. As such, we have created additional outdoor and at-home recreational opportunities for residents during this difficult time when many indoor amenities are prohibited from operating. I encourage everyone to participate in these fun activities this winter, and partake in the backyard ice rink photo contest!”

Brampton Backyard Ice Rink Contest

Have you built a backyard ice rink this season? Submit a photo for a chance to win amazing prizes – like a one-hour skate on your rink with NHL alumni Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark! For full details, including tips for making a backyard ice rink, click here.

Outdoor walking programs

Walk and play through Brampton Recreation’s outdoor walking programs, led by trained instructors. These programs require clear paths, and will run weather permitting. Registration is required.

• Family Hike and Scavenger Hunt (all ages)

• Nordic Walking (ages 14+ and 55+)

• Walk and Tone Drop-In (ages 14+ and 55+)

Outdoor games and activities

Residents can enjoy free outdoor games and activities this winter across the city, including archery and frisbee disc golf. Visit www.brampton.ca/recreation for details.

Winter-in-the-Park After School Drop-In Program

Children and youth in the age groups of 6 to 10 and 10 to 14 are invited to drop-in, instructor-led outdoor games and activities at select locations. Visit www.brampton.ca/playinthepark for full details.

Outdoor skating rinks extended hours

Hours of operation at Mount Pleasant, Gage Park, Gore Meadows, Chinguacousy Park, Flower City, Earnscliffe and Jim Archdekin have been extended from 10 am to 10 pm. Additional programming includes outdoor shinny at Gore Meadows. Registration is not required, and rinks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Masks are recommended when attendees cannot maintain a two-metre distance. Visit www.brampton.ca/outdoorskating for details.

Mount Chinguacousy

Mount Chinguacousy drop-in skiing, snowboarding and tubing is tentatively scheduled to open on January 14, 2022, weather and snow conditions permitting. Masks are required while in the chalet (to purchase tickets and for rentals) and while waiting for the ski lift line. Masks are also recommended in outdoor areas when attendees cannot maintain a two-metre distance. Recreational trails and sports fields

Take a beautiful winter stroll through our recreational trails and enjoy our city’s outdoor sports fields and fitness equipment this winter. All main recreational trails and outdoor fitness equipment remain open and maintained. Select outdoor fields and courts also remain open for play including soccer, basketball, tennis and ball hockey. Live virtual workouts

Join us for free, 55-minute live virtual workouts with trained fitness instructors from the comfort of your own home. Registration starts January 8 for the following classes: Power Sculpt, Zumba TM, Bootcamp, and Meditate and Rejuvenate. Visit www.brampton.ca/recreation for more information.

Brampton Library activity kits

Beginning January 11, residents can enjoy seasonal activity kits from the Brampton Library Lending Program. Self-directed games and activities can help keep the body and mind active, are easy to learn and can be adapted to any skill level. Visit www.brampton.ca/recreation for more information.
