BRAMPTON, ON (March 21, 2025) – The City of Brampton welcomes today’s announcement from the federal government regarding its intention to support the advancement of the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) Extension into downtown Brampton through the Metro-Region Agreement (MRA) stream of the Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF). This investment will help shape the future of transit in Ontario’s third-largest city, connecting residents to efficient, sustainable and reliable transportation.

As one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada, Brampton is committed to expanding transit infrastructure to meet the needs of its residents. The Hazel McCallion LRT project is an essential step in this direction. The 18-kilometre, 19-stop LRT is currently under construction from Mississauga to the Brampton Gateway Terminal. The planned four-kilometre extension will bring the LRT into downtown Brampton, creating a direct connection to the city’s core and improving transit access for residents and businesses.

This transformative project will deliver:

  • Enhanced connectivity: Seamless integration with Brampton Transit, Züm, GO Transit, and other regional transit networks.
  • Reduced congestion: Encouraging transit use to alleviate traffic on Brampton’s busiest roads.
  • Environmental sustainability: Electrically powered light rail vehicles producing near-zero emissions.
  • Economic growth: Spurring urban renewal and economic activity, with an anticipated 33,000 new housing units and 17,000 jobs generated by the project.

The City of Brampton has long advocated for the extension of the Hazel McCallion LRT as a vital component of its transportation and economic development strategy. The extension will strengthen Brampton’s position as a hub for business and innovation while ensuring residents have access to efficient and sustainable transit options.

This announcement builds on the Ontario government’s commitment to extending the Hazel McCallion LRT into downtown Brampton, which includes funding for the development of a rapid transit tunnel. The provincial investment ensures seamless integration with existing transit systems while supporting Brampton’s vision for a thriving and connected downtown core.

The City of Brampton looks forward to working with all levels of government to advance this critical transit project and remains committed to delivering a world-class transportation network that supports the city’s growth and prosperity.
