In a move underscoring the tense diplomatic relations between India and Canada, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Canadian deputy high commissioner on Monday. The summoning came in response to Khalistan separatist slogans being raised during an event in Toronto, which was attended and addressed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

According to the MEA, the Government of India conveyed its “deep concern and strong protest” over the incident, noting that the unchecked continuation of such separatist expressions poses serious risks. The Indian statement elaborated that these actions not only strain bilateral relations but also “encourage a climate of violence and criminality in Canada,” potentially harming its own citizens.

The event in question took place during the Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto, one of the biggest annual gatherings in the city, attracting thousands from the Sikh community. Prime Minister Trudeau, addressing the crowd amid loud pro-Khalistan chants, reassured the Sikh community of Canada’s unwavering support for their rights and freedoms.

“One of Canada’s greatest strengths is its diversity. We are strong not in spite of our differences, but because of our differences,” Trudeau stated. He further emphasized that “Sikh values are Canadian values,” highlighting the shared principles between the community and the nation.

This diplomatic friction arises at a critical time. Relations between India and Canada have been strained following the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a man India had designated as a terrorist, which previously ignited a row between the two nations. The Indian government’s actions indicate a serious concern over the potential for such events to escalate into larger conflicts that could further damage the delicate ties between the two countries.

The MEA’s firm stance reflects India’s growing impatience with what it perceives as Canadian leniency towards anti-India activities on its soil. As both nations navigate this challenging diplomatic landscape, the international community watches closely, hopeful for a resolution that fosters peace and understanding between the diverse populations of both countries.
