To save a life-You should not shy away – Bilal Kausar

Brampton: On Wed June 5, Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre gathered local community members and the media to recognize and honor two brave individuals, Dr. Mian Muhammad Ali Akram & Mr. Bilal Kausar, for their heroic actions that saved the life of another Canadian while onboard a flight back to Toronto.

Earlier this year, on an approximately thirteen-hour long flight from Islamabad, Pakistan to Toronto, a male passenger suffered from a heart attack just a few hours after takeoff. The staff on flight tried to assist him but he fell unconscious and more help was requested from other passengers onboard. As soon as an announcement was made by the flight attendants for assistance, Dr. Akram and Mr. Kausar heroically stepped forward and volunteered to help the victim with immediate lifesaving first-aid.

Dr. Akram and Mr. Kausar worked as a team to revive the individual while using the limited amount of medical equipment onboard. While the onboard AED (Automated External Defibrillator) was put on charge, they used a smart watch of another passenger to monitor the heartrate. Dr. Akram had some of his own equipment onboard with him, from which he conducted an onsite Echocardiogram (Echo). An echocardiogram (echo) is a test that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to make pictures of the heart.

With the help of both these men, the individual was brought back to consciousness and continuously monitored till the flight safely landed at Toronto Pearson Airport. Upon landing, he was rushed to the nearest medical centre where he was stabilized.

While Shafqat Ali, MP said, “I want all Canadians to be inspired by the heroic actions of these two individuals and remember to never loose hope even in the worst conditions.

And Dr. Akram said, “These things are never planned, but luckily everything fell in place, and the individual was resuscitated.

“It was just a matter of instinct, if you see a situation in which you think a small contribution from you side can help save a life, you should not shy away from that said, Bilal Kausar.
