Region of Peel – Peel Regional Police are reminding the public of the risks associated with warming up vehicles during the winter months, while keys are in the ignition.
Using statistics from patrol divisions in Brampton and Mississauga, from December 2017 to February 2018, a total of 124 vehicles were stolen while being warmed up and from December 2018 to February 2019, a total of 231 vehicles were stolen while being warmed up, which is an increase of 60% in warm up related vehicle thefts.
For the 2019/2020 winter season, investigators are hoping to reverse the trend and are encouraging the public to follow these tips to protect their vehicles:
1) Use remote car starters
2) Do not leave the key in the ignition as vehicle is warming up
3) Do not leave vehicles unattended
4) Ensure vehicle doors are locked
