Teens nabbed after posting video showing burnt Pride flag

A pair of 16-year-old Mississauga teens have been arrested after posting video showing them burning a Pride flag to social media, Peel Police said Tuesday. 12 Division’s Criminal Investigative Bureau said that authorities were alerted to the video after receiving a report of the same video circulating online, which showed a Pride flag burning on the ground.

Police later arrested the two youths, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, on June 17 in connection with the video, after consulting with attorneys, investigators referred the individuals to a pre-charge diversion program, one of several “extrajudicial measures put in place to hold youth accountable for their offending behaviours and assist them in not re-offending if either youth is unsuccessful in completing the diversion program.”

“The Peel Regional Police Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Bureau have been actively involved throughout this investigation, and our officers take all reports of hate motivated incidents and crimes very seriously,” the force said in a statement Tuesday.
