This First-Person narrative shares the experiences of Crystal MacCormac, a health sector employee residing in Charlottetown, as she navigates the challenges of financial instability and anxiety associated with everyday expenses.

Grocery shopping has become a source of anxiety and distress for MacCormac and her spouse, particularly due to their financial constraints. Balancing the costs of food and essential medications for her diabetic and health-compromised partner often means making difficult choices at the checkout counter, sacrificing fresh produce for cheaper alternatives to stretch their budget until the next payday.

Reflecting on her journey, MacCormac recalls a time when she pursued higher education in her late 30s to improve their financial situation, which brought temporary relief. However, the rising costs of living, including rent, utilities, and groceries, soon eroded their financial stability, leaving them struggling to make ends meet.

Despite having stable jobs, MacCormac and her husband find that their income no longer suffices to cover their basic needs, forcing them to forgo family gatherings and rely on food banks for assistance. The loss of savings and the inability to enjoy simple luxuries like dining out or going to the movies further exacerbate their financial distress.

Feeling powerless against the relentless rise in expenses, MacCormac expresses frustration and hopelessness, lamenting the lack of control over her financial situation. However, amidst the challenges, she finds solace in the support of her loved ones and holds onto hope for a brighter future.

Looking ahead, MacCormac remains hopeful for a reprieve, yearning for a reduction in rental costs, more affordable groceries, and higher wages to alleviate the financial burden. She dreams of a day when she and her husband can once again enjoy the simple pleasures of life, free from the constant worry of financial insecurity.
