Niagara Falls, ON – Niagara Parks in partnership with the Niagara Jazz Festival presented by TD Ready Commitment will host the kick-off to the Niagara Jazz Festival 2024 Summer Festival Series with The POWER of MUSIC at Oakes Garden Theatre on Saturday, June 21.
Set within one of Niagara Parks’ most spectacular outdoor venues overlooking the Falls, the historic Oakes Garden Theatre, the evening will feature performances by 2024 JUNO Award nominated Blues group Blackburn Brothers and the Sean Stanley Quartet. Tickets to the evening event are $40 per person with $1 per ticket sold donated to MusiCounts, Canada’s music education charity associated with the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Science (CARAS) and JUNO Awards.
Headlining the event is Blackburn Brothers, the award-winning Blues group led by a band of brothers whose musical lineage traces back to R&B legend Bobby Dean Blackburn. Blackburn Brothers’ most recent album SoulFunk’nBlues has received wide critical acclaim, including a 2024 JUNO nomination for Blues Album of the Year. The Blackburn Brothers are fourth-generation Canadians and descendants of freedom seekers through the Underground Railroad whose music shares a message of history, freedom, legacy, family, black unity, and love.
Opening for Blackburn Brothers are esteemed jazz musicians, the Sean Stanley Quartet. The Toronto-based quartet proudly plays Jazz, Swing and the Blues, including the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Erroll Garner, as well as original compositions. Sean, the bandleader, vocalist and pianist of the group, is one of the few Indigenous artists in Toronto’s jazz scene. As a Pottawatomi/Ojibwe and Acadian musician, he incorporates his identity and experiences overcoming adversities in his music, offering the audience unique, powerful, moving jazz creations.
Throughout the concert, informative video content will be integrated to position the rich culture of jazz music within the context of the history of the Niagara region. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to make themselves comfortable for an evening of incredible music in a relaxed, outdoor setting.
